The 50 Best Restaurants in the World 2014

How are the best restaurants in the world determined? There are a few groups that attempt to present their own list, but the most recognized is the "World's 50 Best Restaurants, presented by S. Pellegrino and Acqua Panna." The list is published by the UK magazine, Restaurant, after polling a large panel of restauranteurs, critics, chefs, and other regional industry folks. The 13th annual list announcement will take place in London on June 1, 2015 (the announcement event was previously held in April each year).
Most of the 50 ranked restaurants exemplify haute cuisine - characterized by intense and artistic preparation and presentation of the food. The list also also features many examples of gastronomic experimentation, in addition to rewarding chefs carrying on traditional techniques at the top of their game. Most, but not all, ranked restaurants are formal, so be sure to bring appropriate attire when traveling if you plan to visit. But due to their popularity, especially after being placed on this prestigious list, reservations are almost always required and only available WELL in advance. Some restaurants shut down for several months each year for vacations and/or close to renovate or reinvent their menu. If reservations are not available during the dates of your trip, contact the restaurant with your trip dates and ask to be put on their waitlist.
