The Eiger was first ascended in 1858 along its western flank. The sheer north face however had long been its most tantalizing, and dangerous, side. The north face had claimed several lives until the first successful ascent in 1938 by an Austrian-German expedition.
Many books have chronicled the feats and triumphs of climbing the Eiger, one of which was made into a film in 1975, "The Eiger Sanction," featuring Clint Eastwood.
Behind the north face runs a railway tunnel with two stations offering views of the landscape and glacier below. These are the second and third highest railway stations in Europe, only outdone by the Jungfraujoch station in the Jungfrau peak which shares the same ridge with Eiger.
