The nearest towns are Le Grand-Bornand to the southwest, and Cluses to the north. Road D4 connects both over the Col de la Colombière.
The climb has been used in the Tour de France 20 times since first being used in 1960. It is classified as a Category 1 climb, the second most difficult rating.
Approaching from Scionzier, a suburb of Cluses, the climb is 16.3 km long, with an elevation gain of 1,108 m and an average gradient of 6.8% (10.2% max near the summit). For added difficulty, the alternate route would be to use road D119 out of Scionzier over Col de Romme, which connects with road D4 at Reposoir. Adventurous cyclists can continue on toward Col des Aravis, Col des Saisies, and Col de la Madeleine, in sequence.
From Le Grand-Bornand, the route is 11.7 km long, gaining 690 m in elevation with an average gradient of 5.9%.
