It is a famous climb in the Tour de France, and frequently included in the race. Since it's first appearance in 1910, it has been used in 76 different Tours de France (as of 2013); it has only been used as a mountain finish on two occasions. Since 1980, it has been classified as HC (beyond category), the most difficult rating for a climb.
From Luz-Saint-Sauveur, the western route is 19 km long, gaining 1,404 m with an average gradient of 7.4% (10.2% max near the summit).
From Sainte-Marie-de-Campan, the eastern route is 17.2 km long, gaining 1,268 m with an average gradient of 7.4% (10% max).
