Gear Spotlight: Salsa Mukluk Fat Bike
Posted on January 10, 2014 by

Remember when cyclocross was "the next big thing" in cycling? Even though it wasn't really new. Well, the even more newer and bigger next thing would have to be Fat Bikes. I've been seeing these tanks everywhere, trails, snow slopes, and even with those massive tires they seem to hold their own on roads and paved paths. The wider, cartoonish tires will roll over anything, and provide unmatched traction and stability. Major manufacturers Trek and Specialized even rolled out their own fat bikes this season, so it's safe to say that fat bikes will be sticking around.
Salsa is raising the stakes in the fat bike market with their 2014 Mukluk TI fat bike. The Mukluk TI features an all titanium frame, to lower weight but still provide strength and durability. The innovative Alternator dropouts gives adaptability to run this as a singlespeed, or with gears. Mounting options and a frame bag (sold separately) allow this rig to carry a lot of gear. The result, a versatile rig to have fun with on quick rides or a mule to ferry you on epic, multi-day adventures where no other bike can take you.
The Titanium version is priced at $4,399, or $2,299 as a frameset only. The Mukluk 2 version, made of 6066 Aluminum goes for $2,399 ($699 as a frame), and the Mukluk 3 (mostly the same as the Mukluk 2 with a step down in components) is more budget-friendly at $1,850.
