REEL ROCK 8 Film Tour
Posted on September 20, 2013 by
REEL ROCK 8 premiered with four new films last night in Boulder, Colorado. If you're a fan of going vertical, or like me - are comfortable with just watching others scale impossibly sheer cliffs - then check out these films if you happen to be near one of the viewings.
The four short films are from Sender Films and Big UP Productions, featuring a variety of up-and-coming climbers mixed with legends of the sport.

THE SENSEI
In what possibly be called a modern remake of The Karate Kid, legendary Japanese climber Yuji Hirayama selects a talented but unpolished young American climber, Daniel Woods (aka "Daniel-San"), to tackle a formidable high-altitude project in Borneo as his swan song from the sport. This was my favorite film of the four, a very funny passing of the torch story where both pupil and teacher learn from one another.
Running Time: 28 minutes.

SPICE GIRL
Considered UK's best female climber, young Hazel Findlay is already the first female to successfully climb an E9 graded climb (super hard and sketchy). Watch as she learns the ropes from her father, a legendary climber in his own right, and leaves the roost to tackle a challenging big wall at Taghia Gorge in Morocco with Emily Harrington.

THE STONEMASTERS
A look at the Stonemasters, the new wave of irreverant climbers that took the Yosemite National Park by storm in the 1970's. This was actually a long teaser for the upcoming "Valley Uprising" film to be released in 2014.

HIGH TENSION
Controversy erupted on Mt. Everest during the 2013 season, when a brawl erupted between normally peaceful Sherpas and a professional alpinist group including Ueli Stecke. Hear both sides of the story that brought up questions of the commercial dominance of Mt. Everest over true alpinist adventures, as well as inevitable tensions coming to a head after decades of inequality faced by Sherpas.
REEL ROCK is called a "tour," though the films will be shown concurrently on the same nights in various cities around the world. You can find the REEL ROCK 8 tour schedule here.
