Mount McKinley renamed Denali
Posted on August 30, 2015 by

Mount McKinley, as the largest peak in North America had officially been named since 1896, is officially being renamed Denali. The 20,320 foot high peak is located in Alaska in the Denali National Park and Preserve. The name change was announced by President Obama after a visit to the state to promote action to quell global climate change.
The name Denali has been a sacred name to Alaska Natives for centuries, which translates to "The High One." In terms of highest summit elevation, it does not even crack the list of the top 100 mountains in the world. But by topographical prominence, measure as height above the surrounding terrain at its base, it is ranked #3 in the world, behind Everest and Aconcagua (Argentina). Denali is a goal of the Seven Summits - a mountaineering challenge where climbers conquer the highest peak on each continent.
We are renaming references to Mount McKinley on Xploritall in light of the official name change. If you already added McKinley to your travel wishlist, it will automatically transfer to Denali.
