Gear Spotlight: Clif Bar Organic Energy Food

Posted on February 5, 2015 by Jamie Brady   comments

Clif Bar has rolled out a new product category, called Organic Energy Food. Using real-food ingredients, the flavors were inspired by the home recipes of Team Clif Bar athletes to supply energy and satisfy cravings. The focus is on two types of activities: Go Fast, or high intensity efforts lasting an hour or more; and Go Long, or longer training and races generally 2 hours or more. Ingredients in all flavors are USDA Organic Certified, gluten-free and Kosher. The packaging is meant to be super portable and resealable so an athlete doesn't feel like they have to consume it all at once. A Camelbak bite-valve can even be installed on the pouch for easier eating on the go. The whole package is TerraCyclable (www.terracycle.com).

Key Benefits
Made from real, organic ingredients
2 subtly sweet flavors for fast training and racing
2 category-first savory flavors for longer training and racing

GO FAST OR GO LONG

For activities lasting 1 hour or more, athletes should consume carbohydrates and electrolytes for energy and proper muscle function. And for activities lasting more than 2 hours, adding fat and protein to the mix can help with additional energy and satiety. All flavors of Clif Organic Energy Food are meant to be eaten during activity, as opposed to before or after.
GO FAST: Sweet is best for higher intensity activity where energy from carbohydrates is the top priority.
GO LONG: Savory is best for long outings, generally 2 hours or more, when athletes deplete their sodium stores and frequently develop an aversion to sweet-tasting products.

SWEET FLAVORS – GO FAST NUTRITION
Both these flavors are subtly sweet and less concentrated than energy gels, meaning they go down quickly and can help some athletes avoid GI distress.

Banana Mango with Coconut
- 100 calories
- Bananas provide both glucose and fructose, plus potassium
- Shredded coconut provides subtle texture
- Sea salt for sodium (electrolyte) delivery

Banana Beet with Ginger
- 110 calories
- Bananas provide both glucose and fructose, plus potassium
- Athletes use ginger to calm their stomachs
- Sea salt for sodium (electrolyte) delivery

SAVORY FLAVORS – GO LONG NUTRITION
Both savory flavors contain more than 500mg of sodium per serving and have a distinct savory flavor, making them the perfect companion when you’re going long.

Pizza Margherita
- 160 calories
- A classic pizza flavor providing both glucose and fructose
- Sunflower seed butter and olive oil provide protein and fat to enhance satiety
- Sodium and potassium to help meet electrolyte needs

Sweet Potato with Sea Salt
- 200 calories
- A riff on the endurance classic -- boiled potato rolled in salt -- providing both glucose and fructose
- Sunflower seed butter and olive oil provide protein and fat to enhance satiety
- Sodium and potassium to help meet electrolyte needs

So, it looks like there's now an option between just energy gels or having to set up a stove to cook a dehydrated meal.

Once I get my hands on some samples I will post my thoughts on how well they worked and tasted. I'll also see if Clif Bar will send us extra samples to give out to Xploritall readers as well. Stay tuned!
