Hiking is an outdoor activity which consists of walking in natural environments, often in mountainous or other scenic terrain. People often hike on hiking trails. It is such a popular activity that there are numerous hiking organizations worldwide. The health benefits of different types of hiking have been confirmed in studies. Some of the health benefits of hiking include, but are not limited to, losing excess weight, decreasing hypertension, and improving mental health. The word hiking is understood in all English-speaking countries, but there are differences in usage.

Regular camping means sleeping overnight in tents or cabins in designated campsites. They can also have an insulated layer, to keep the feet warm during hikes in snow and/or cold weather. Hiking shoes are a little lighter than boots, and can be easier to maneuver if the hike involves scrambling over rocks where you'll need to lift your feet a lot. Shoes can come in a variety of heights at the top (e.g. mid-top, high-top), providing more or less protection for the ankle and lower leg. This can be important if hiking in loose or uneven terrain where your foot could potential "roll" and injure your ankle. It's important to try on a pair of shoes with the thickness of sock you intend to wear while hiking, as this will affect your fit. Also, make sure you "break in" your shoes or boots by wearing them for progressively longer periods of time until they are not as stiff. Wearing a new pair on a long hike can be uncomfortable at best, or can cause blisters or injuries.
