Activities

Architecture is the art and science of designing a building or structure to perform its intended purpose. Architects design the aesthetic appearance of structures in a variety of ways. Various styles have evolved through the history and pre-history of man, which have their own formalized or general design principles. Architects can choose to adhere to the rigid principles of a style, they can use elements that are suggestive or evocative of a design style, or they can reject formalized styles and present a new interpretation of how a structure should look.
A structure's purpose may also have a say in the design of the building. A municipal building may be appropriately stoic, or sturdy in appearance to project that society's status or demonstrate the values it considers important. A cultural building might be whimsical in appearance, or be designed in a way that metaphorically represents the use of the building.
Architecture is a subjective form of art, meaning the appreciation of the appearance of a structure will wildly vary from one person to the next. Some people may experience and emotional response from architecture (e.g. a war veteran visiting the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C.), others may be indifferent, and others may be critical for a variety of reasons. Therefore, the structures labelled with the Architecture activity on Xploritall may be associated with it for a number of reasons: 1) it was designed by a famous or award winning architect, 2) the structure is a landmark and is a popular tourist attraction, 3) it is historically or culturally significant.
Not all structures associated with the Architecture activity will be accessible to the general public. In the descriptions, we will include this information.
